We aim to empower our community through accessible and culturally affirming yoga practices that honor our diverse identities and stories. Black Bear Yoga was founded in Denver, Colorado in 2019.

    Melanin on the Mat

Melanin on the Mat Project with Black Bear Yoga

The Melanin on the Mat Project is an initiative by Black Bear Yoga designed to bring more diversity, inclusivity, and representation to yoga spaces by specifically encouraging people of color to engage in yoga practice. This project aims to create safe, welcoming environments where people of color can feel seen, valued, and empowered as they explore the benefits of yoga.

    Why This Project is Important:

Yoga spaces in the U.S. have historically lacked diversity, with around 77% of practitioners being White, while only 6% are Black, 5% are Asian, and 8% are Hispanic or Latino. In Denver, Colorado, similar patterns are observed, reflecting a significant underrepresentation of people of color in yoga studios and wellness spaces

The Melanin on the Mat Project seeks to address this gap by intentionally creating yoga environments that are culturally relevant and accessible to communities of color.

    Why Yoga Needs Diversity:

    1. Promoting Equity: Ensuring all communities have access to yoga’s mental, emotional, and physical health benefits.

    2. Fostering Belonging: Creating safe spaces where people of color see themselves represented, feel welcomed, and empowered.

    3. Challenging Stereotypes: Expanding the narrative of who yoga is for and highlighting diverse cultural contributions to the practice.

    4. Building Inclusivity: Encouraging broader participation and transforming wellness spaces to reflect the diversity of the communities they serve.
